This is Kristina. Building on her own talent, she now has the beginnings of ‘technique’: a specific way of working on the stage via her ‘instrument’ (body/voice) and the way she builds a character.  Kristina has specifically excelled in voice work (she fills the auditorium with her voice without a microphone) and character development (she bridges the gap between the work done in rehearsal and truly living in the moment of the character on the stage). Kristina graduated IS 171 in June 2011 and is now attending Talent Unlimited High School.

Neil

This is Neil a third grader from Harlem and a member of the community based program at Harlem RBI. Neil participated in our African Arts class in spring, 2008 lead by teaching artist, Vickie Freemont. The class focused on using recycled materials to create and learn about crafts from diverse African cultures. For Neil this opportunity exposed him to something distinctive and allowed others to see what he perceives in this art form. Neil says “having the chance to show others what I can create through this program has given me more confidence.”

This is Jalisa. A shy student in Patricia Runcie’s Fall 2009 Theater Arts class, Jalisa played the role of playwright for the final performance, A Talk Show About Theater History. In rehearsals, each student took turns sitting in the guest seat and was interviewed by the host. When Jalisa’s turn came, her shyness was painful. Knowing it was important for Jalisa to enjoy herself and to succeed, Patricia, the teaching artist, worked with her one-on-one, commenting “if I could help her find her own inner motivation to be successful, it would inspire her and help her discover the joy of learning”. Sure enough, when the day of the performance came, Jalisa demonstrated that she had indeed found that inner-motivation.  The audience’s reaction said it all. “I saw the girl that I knew was inside her,” said Patricia.

Laindry

This is Laindry. In his Visual Arts Class at Riverdale Neighborhood House in Fall 2011, Liandry was expected to master art vocabulary, art critique and create a portfolio of work. Because Laundry had not previously done any serious drawing or painting, he was intimidated at first. But, with teaching artist Miguel Cossio’s guidance, Laundry created his own superhero cartoon character and several abstract landscape paintings based on the work of artists like Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock. By the end of the program, Laundry’s portfolio was displayed before his proud parents at the culminating Art show at RNH. Most importantly, Liandry thought that the whole thing was, “Awesome and fun – I loved all of it.”

This is Catherine. A feisty and full of life “character actress,” Catherine began her theatre training in small parts and worked her way up to starring roles. In June she played a main character in the musical, Optimistic Orphan.  She began with fearlessness on the stage, and now has the vocabulary and skills to confidently approach a role. When faced with a challenge during rehearsal or performance anxiety, Catherine has learned that she can overcome these obstacles by trusting her instincts and utilizing her theatre education. Catherine graduated IS 171 in June 2011 and is now attending the specialized New York public high school, Talented Unlimited..Catherine on the stage
